North London Collegiate School is one of the foremost girls' schools in Britain; twice named The Sunday Times Independent School of the Year in 1999 and 2006 and ranked in The Daily Telegraph ‘Top 5’ Independent Schools for A-level results for the last 10 years, twice as top school. Excellent results are achieved consistently. In 2005 100% of students went on to university. NLCS offers the International Baccalaureate as an alternative pathway alongside A-levels in the Sixth Form.
The school was founded by Frances Mary Buss in 1850.
A city school in beautiful parkland, the girls enjoy the stunning surroundings which include rose gardens and terraces, herbaceous borders and an avenue of lime trees. There is a pond complete with water lilies and ducks. On site are a Music School, Drawing School and Technology Centre; a Sports Centre, with indoor swimming pool and fitness suite, and a Performing Arts Centre for dance and drama.
The school has an impressive range of facilities. There is a full programme of General Studies and a long list of clubs and societies. Distinguished speakers visit regularly. School choirs and orchestras perform at the highest level, including winning the Founder's Trophy at the National Chamber Music Competition ten times. Drama productions have been taken to the Edinburgh Fringe. Students participate in the national Young Enterprise and Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes, and Model United Nations. Debating and Public Speaking are popular pursuits. On the sports field, students are selected to join teams at national and county level.
The Junior School is accommodated in a self-contained building on the site with its own science and technology facilities, library and art room. The First School is next door, and all three sections of the school enjoy close links with each other.
