Old Swinford Hospital is one of Britain's leading state boarding schools. Ofsted recently identified it as outstanding, having gained top marks in all 39 inspection categories.
Under the Government’s Popular and Successful Schools programme we are embarking upon an expansion programme to include a new boarding house, teaching block and extended sports facilities.
Almost two-thirds of the School's 611 pupils are full or weekly boarders drawn from the local area, throughout the United Kingdom and further afield. It is situated in the heart of England, with easy access to the motorway network and Birmingham International Airport. As a state boarding school we welcome applications from UK and European Union nationals for whom the education is free. Parents pay only for board and lodging which from September 2008 will be £3075 per term. Girls are now admitted as day students into the Sixth Form.
Accommodation is currently provided in seven boarding houses, increasing to eight from September 2009. Junior boarders reside in three or four bedded rooms with Sixth Formers having their own single study bedrooms. Each House is well provided with study and recreational facilities. There is a well-equipped Medical Centre with professional qualified staff. Every boy is supported by his personal Tutor, based within the House. Our junior House, Prospect, is the reception House for all our 11 year old entry. Here boys learn to live together for the first time.
Our reputation is based upon excellent academic results, superb facilities and a friendly atmosphere. An extensive range of activities is provided for all students and there is an ambitious programme of weekend outings. A wide variety of sports is available, including minority sports such as golf, archery and fencing. Strong emphasis is placed on developing leadership skills and a sense of responsibility to the wider community.
The average class size is 17 in the Sixth Form and 21 in years 7 to 11. Whilst there is a strong emphasis on science, technology and computing, a full range of core and optional subjects is available throughout the School. The School regularly features towards the top of the DCFS league tables.
Admission for boarding places is by interview at 11+ or 13+ or the Sixth Form. Academic and music Scholarships are available plus Foundation Awards for 11+ entrants whose families would otherwise be unable to afford the boarding fee.
