Appleford School is a DfES approved co-educational day and boarding school for dyslexic pupils, aged 7 - 13. Pupils are taught the National Curriculum, with particular emphasis on basic literacy and numeracy skills. The whole-school approach at Appleford includes:
* class sizes between 6 - 12 with in-class ancillary support.
* a whole-school approach to dyslexia with research-backed, multisensory programmes, designed to encourage increased self-confidence and self-esteem.
* teachers are DfES qualified, with a high ratio of specialist qualifications in dyslexia.
* an extensive games and fixtures programme, numerous challenges and in excess of 50 activities during the school year, from claywork to gymnastics, from sewing to judo. A carefully planned and stimulating weekend programme is available.
* a high level of pastoral support geared to the needs of the individual, including PSHE sessions.
* experienced, mature and caring houseparents in a friendly, structured boarding situation encouraging the development of personal organisation and life-skills.
* a strong professional support team, including a chartered educational psychologist, speech therapist and occupational therapist on site.
Since Appleford was founded in 1988, over 80% of our pupils have progressed to such an extent as to enable them to proceed to a mainstream rather than a further specialist school.
