Established in 1525 Sedbergh School is fully co-educational 13-18 with its own Junior School (Sedbergh Junior School 4-13, situated half an hour’s drive away). Sedbergh has a national reputation for sporting excellence, especially in Rugby, Shooting and Cross-country and also boasts very strong Creative Arts. Art, Drama, Music and Design Technology all have their own dedicated facilities. There are two theatres, a lecture theatre, gallery and shooting range. International Music and Sport tours are very regular. It is expected pupils will progress to University, with places regularly secured at Oxbridge.
It is one of the few schools to retain the traditional House system whereby pupils return to their Houses to eat, study and sleep. All Houses have a resident Housemaster/Housemistress, academic Tutors and Matron, allowing for very close pastoral care. These small Houses create a friendly, reassuring atmosphere - popular with parents and pupils alike. Chapel, too, plays an important role in School life. There is a very wide-ranging social calendar for all ages, the highlight of which is the caledonian Rawthey Ball. The Queen's Hall provides a versatile venue for lectures, debates, entertainment, discos, dances whilst housing the Sixth Form bar.
Sedbergh offers Academic, Music, Art, Drama, Sport and DT Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards. The School also benefits from the £4.5m Robertson Fund which provides further Scholarships for those who excel either Academically or in the Creative Arts. Means-tested Bursaries are available.
Situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and close to the Lake District, Sedbergh's stunning location is a world away from the pressures and temptations of urban life and allows for a huge range of outdoor pursuits (including caving and climbing). The School maintains three conservation sites on its extensive estate, and has first class sports pitches including a superb all weather surface. However, proximity to the M6 and main London/Glasgow rail line the School is very accessible to most major cities of England and Scotland. The School arranges escorted travel from London, Manchester and Glasgow airports.
Entry is usually at 13+ and 16+ but pupils may be considered at other ages.
