Yarm School, a day coeducational grammar school, is situated in the attractive and historic town of Yarm on the River Tees. It was established in its present form in 1978 providing education for pupils aged 11 to 18. It has its own Preparatory School for boys and girls aged 7 to 10, an Early School for boys and girls aged 4 to 6 years and a Nursery for 3 year-olds.
The schools occupy two adjacent sites on the outskirts of Yarm. The Preparatory School opened in 1991 in response to public demand for traditional preparatory school education. It has a range of first class facilities and aims to provide excellent education in a caring environment.
In addition, there is a satellite junior school in Darlington, Yarm at Raventhorpe, run and owned as part of Yarm School. It accommodates 100 pupils 3-11.
A large proportion of the Senior School buildings, based around The Friarage (an eighteenth century mansion), have been built within the last ten years or so and in consequence are admirably suited to their purpose. September 1992 saw the completion of a sports hall, squash court and 600 seat theatre with adjacent Music department and classrooms for the teaching of Modern Languages. September 1996 saw the opening of a purpose built Science complex which includes advanced facilities for computing and technology. In the last two years a new Sixth Form Centre and Astroturf all-weather pitch have been added to the impressive facilities.
The school's academic reputation is high and almost all leavers go on to university. Its sporting reputation is also enviable, with success being achieved right up to national level and the wide range of sports offered caters for most tastes and both genders. Adventurous outdoor education - canoeing, skiing, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, the CCF and overseas expeditions - receives extensive support whilst the school's strength in music and drama provides outstanding opportunities for pupils in a further dimension.
The schools have always been determined to give their pupils the benefits of an education equal in quality and scope to that provided by a first rate boarding school. It is for this reason that the teaching at Yarm is more extensive than in most day schools. This enables Yarm to offer a balanced and wide ranging programme of sporting and extra curricular activities without sacrificing academic priorities.
A range of scholarships and bursaries is available. Please contact the School for further details.
