A Word from the Head

I arrived at Sidcot in April 1998 having been attracted by the Quaker ethos and the liberal, supportive and holistic education on offer at the school. I found a unique atmosphere where children can be individuals, yet still work as part of a team, and where students and staff work together within a learning community. Sidcot was first founded in 1699 and along with the other Friends' Schools, has always been at the forefront of educational thinking. I feel very privileged to lead the school at the beginning of the 21st Century when many changes are happening in education and in the society around us.

The school is set in 150 acres of the Mendip countryside near Cheddar and Weston-super-Mare. There are especially good facilities for sport, outdoor pursuits, craft, computing, science, music and drama. The school enrols above-average and average ability children by Common Entrance or school report. All students complete a Sidcot baseline assessment test and students for Years 7 and 9 have the opportunity to take a scholarship exam. Entrance can be at any age from eleven up to eighteen years (and three to eleven in Sidcot Junior School).

Schools should be about ALL children doing as well as they can and Sidcot recognises that every individual has this immense potential to excel whether in the academic, creative or practical field. I expect our students to take initiative, to respect themselves and others and to care about their environment and wider global issues. I believe that Sidcot is a school where the children engage with the world and want to make a difference, and I place the Quaker values of tolerance, internationalism, clarity and honesty at the heart of everything we do. I am sure that it is our creative, caring and eclectic ethos that inspires our excellent level of academic achievement.

Please come and visit us, talk to our staff, see our excellent facilities and beautiful location in the Mendip Hills. I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Sidcot.
