Our aim is to provide an excellent all-round education so that every pupil can achieve his or her full potential academically and socially.
We focus on developing the whole person, aiming to ensure that each pupil leaves here ready for the challenges of life at university and beyond. We believe that truly excellent education is about more than academic achievement alone: it is also about developing a passion for learning, moral values, self-confidence without arrogance, and genuine interests that extend beyond the confines of the classroom.
We are a family school with Christian values. We believe that the virtues of tolerance, understanding, respect and courtesy really matter. We strive to ensure that Caterham pupils have an understanding of their place in society – locally and globally - and seek to make a positive impact upon it.
Excellent A-level results enable over 90% of our pupils to go to the university of their choice. In 2007, 83% went to one of the 'Top Tier' universities with 11% going to Oxford or Cambridge. Caterham School is, however, about much more than just academic excellence. We strive to bring out the best in every individual by creating a culture of involvement and by providing a wide range of opportunities and activities. From sport to music, chess to drama, CCF to Duke of Edinburgh, there are activities to develop teamwork, encourage involvement and bring out the best in everyone.
School life is underpinned by our Christian ethos and we attach real importance to the development of moral and social values among our pupils. Around 155 pupils board out of a total of 790. Our boarding community adds a unique and culturally diverse element and is a feature of the school that is increasingly valued by today’s busy parents, either on a full or flexible basis.
Caterham School is set on an 80 acre campus at the head of the lovely Harestone Valley in the heart of the North Downs in Surrey. It has easy access from the M25 with good rail and bus links to London and the local area. Gatwick and Heathrow airports are 20 minutes and 50 minutes away respectively.
Over the past few years there has been a considerable investment in improving and extending our facilities. Both the boys and girls boarding facilities have been totally refurbished to provide a high standard of accommodation with many en-suite rooms and first class facilities. The theatre/assembly hall has been rebuilt to provide an excellent venue for the performing arts and we benefit from dedicated IT suites and a digital language laboratory. Overall, the school has more than 600 networked computers and more than 60 interactive classroom whiteboards. The new science block and dining hall were completed in 2006.We refurbished the Art & Design block in Summer 2006 and refurbished classrooms for the Humanities Department in 2007. We have started the process of rebuilding the North Wing to create a new area for the 6th Form. This project will be completed by Summer 2008.
Our Prep and Senior schools offer an excellent standard of education to boys and girls from 3 to 18 years with the major entry levels at 3, 7, 11, 13 and in the Sixth Form. Entry into the Pre-Prep and Preparatory Schools is by individual assessment. At 11+ and 13+ candidates sit the school’s own examination and at Sixth Form places are offered on the basis of satisfactory GCSE grades. A range of scholarships and bursaries are available.
It is difficult to convey the wider aspects of the school and I always recommend that, if possible, parents visit a school to get a better sense of the ethos of the school. We will be happy to show you around so that you can meet the pupils who are such a credit to their families, themselves and us. Whilst we have two Open Days a year, we also arrange individual tours. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please contact our Registrar. You will be most welcome.
