The Maynard School has been educating girls in the South West for nearly 350 years. It enjoys a national reputation for top-class opportunities for girls, whether academic, expressive and creative or in physical education. Entry is selective. All students follow a well-balanced course of Arts and Sciences to GCSE. At Sixth Form level, the school prepares girls for universities and for entry to training for many professions and careers; a high percentage gain places at Oxford or Cambridge University. A carefully developed programme of careers advice, begun at 13+ and continuing through to the Sixth Form, ensures that all pupils are individually guided in subject options with their long-term career interests at heart. The school has a strong tradition of involvement in the local community and expects its pupils to make responsible use of their opportunities. Sixth Formers leave the school as confident, articulate and well-qualified young women, eager for the challenges and rewards of higher education and career training.
The school was founded on Christian principles. It is non-denominational; pupils of all faiths and none are welcome and they participate in the full life of the school. It is situated in an attractive conservation area a short distance from the centre of Exeter. Its extensive buildings include a purpose-built Science, Mathematics and Computing block, Sixth Form Centre, well-equipped Home Economics and Textile rooms, Art rooms, Music rooms, Geography rooms and a large Gymnasium. The Junior Department, a detached building in the grounds, is fully equipped for the education of girls aged 7-11 years. Bradley Hall provides full-scale indoor facilities for Sports. Governors' Bursaries (means-tested), two music scholarships and four music exhibitions are awarded annually. Sixth Form scholarships include two art, two sport, one music and one science.
