Frewen College is a friendly, supportive school for the education of children with dyslexia or related difficulties such as dyspraxia or dyscalculia. Our policy of encouraging early intervention has lead us to expand the age range at our separate junior school, The Oaks, down to 5. We are now co-educational, and our number of day girls is increasing steadily each year. Boarding for girls is provided via host families for now. We have re-introduced optional full boarding for boys, which has proved so popular that several day pupils have asked to switch to boarding!
Admissions are based on our assessment of our team’s ability to help an individual child, rather than differentiating on the basis of highly questionable tests of cognitive ability. Once here however, we do not allow their difficulties to provide an easy ‘opt-out’ from success or effort. We treat each pupil as an individual, establishing and building on their strengths, while tackling their specific learning difficulties. For the last five years our pupils have averaged 7 GCSE passes, with around 40% at Grades A* to C, and all leavers have gone on to further education, training, or employment. About half our pupils are private, and currently 18 different LEAs have children placed with us.
We offer the full National Curriculum, and maintain our teacher: pupil ratio at about 1:5.5. We also have full time speech and language and occupational therapists on site. Each pupil has an individual education plan,(described by CReSTeD as 'exemplary') and literacy programmes are tackled using a range of tools. We have introduced a highly successful daily intensive literacy session for all pupils in very small groups.
We have particular strengths in Information Technology, Art,Drama and Design & Technology. We also offer a full range of facilities for Music, Science and Food Technology, and this year have introduced a very popular GCSE in PE & Games. However, the ‘three R’s’ are very important to us, and in literacy and numeracy we place great importance on closing the gap between chronological age and performance.
Our full range of sports facilities includes a large outdoor swimming pool, fitness studio, tennis and basketball court, all weather football and hockey pitch, as well as 60 acres of playing fields and parkland. This year we have introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Scheme, which all Year 9 & 10 pupils are expected to pursue.
Boarding provision features small en-suite bedrooms, a full range of supervised recreational activities, and transport to and from London each week. Our highly reputed catering provision is managed in-house, and features fresh food, locally produced, and with guidance to encourage healthy choices. A number of specialist diets are catered for.
